Post-Operative Guidelines for Gynecomastia Surgery
Position
For about 1 week after surgery, please keep the surgical area elevated above the level of your heart when lying down.
Until 3 months after surgery, it is best to sleep on your back facing upward, and sleeping on your stomach should be avoided for up to 6 months.
Swelling
Immediately after surgery, asymmetry may be noticeable, but as swelling subsides, it will gradually improve, so there is no need to worry.
The more areas that were treated, the greater the swelling may be, and bruising may last for 1–3 weeks. Approximately 70–80% of swelling subsides within 3–4 weeks.
Major swelling decreases during the first 1 month, and the remaining swelling gradually improves over 2–3 months.
To objectively compare the results, at least 3 months of recovery is required.
Recovery Progress
Pain varies by individual, but for most patients, it is usually at a moderate level.
When liposuction is performed over a wide area, the level of pain may be greater.
Itching is a normal part of the healing process. Please avoid scratching or irritating the area, and if necessary, an ice pack may be helpful.
You may experience tightness in the chest, reduced sensation, tingling, or movement-related discomfort.
Most of these symptoms are temporary and gradually improve over 3–6 months. In most cases, they return to normal, and full recovery is expected within 1 year.
Since sudden movements may cause bleeding, it is recommended to avoid driving for at least 1 week after surgery.
Office-based work may be resumed starting 3–4 days after surgery. However, for physically demanding jobs, a recovery period of about 2 weeks is recommended.
Excessive physical activity may increase the risk of hematoma or seroma, so please follow the medical staff’s instructions.
Wound Care
For the first 1–2 days after surgery, a light blood-tinged discharge may occur from the treated area. This is not active bleeding, so there is no need to worry.
Compression Garment or Band
To help reduce swelling, please wear the compression garment starting from the day instructed by the clinic.
It must be worn for at least 4 weeks, and wearing it for 2–3 months or longer is recommended. The duration may vary depending on individual recovery progress.
Showering
Showering is allowed starting 1 week after surgery. Steam rooms, saunas, and half-body baths are prohibited for 1 month after surgery.
Prescribed Medications
Please take all medications prescribed by the clinic as instructed after surgery.
Skipping doses may increase the risk of inflammation.
After discharge, please take the prescribed medications regularly at the designated times. If symptoms such as diarrhea or hives occur after taking the medication, discontinue use and contact the clinic immediately.
Pain relievers are included in the prescription.
However, if you continue to experience significant pain, you may take additional Tylenol (acetaminophen).
For 1 month after surgery, please avoid multivitamins (especially Vitamin E) and nutritional supplements, as they may increase the risk of bleeding.
Unless absolutely necessary, aspirin should be avoided for at least one week after surgery.
Swelling-reduction medications are not recommended, as they may also increase the risk of bleeding.
Exercise
For 1 month, please avoid upper-body exercises that mainly use the chest muscles.
Starting after 2 weeks, light walking is allowed as long as it does not strain the body.
General Post-Operative Precautions
Alcohol & Smoking
Alcohol consumption and smoking are strictly prohibited for one month after surgery.
Please also avoid excessive exercise and stress during the recovery period.
Alcohol may increase the risk of inflammation, and smoking constricts blood vessels, which can delay wound healing and slow recovery.
