Swelling varies from person to person, and immediately after surgery, both eyes may not look exactly the same.
Even minor differences can appear more noticeable at first due to swelling.
Most major swelling subsides within one week, but mild residual swelling may last for 1–3 months or longer.
For the first week after surgery, light cold compresses are recommended.
However, applying cold compresses while sleeping is not advised due to the risk of frostbite.
Cold compresses should be applied for about 15 minutes at a time, followed by a break.
It is best to do this while sitting or lying down with your upper body slightly elevated.
If warm compresses are used, there is a risk of low-temperature burns.
Therefore, we recommend proceeding only if necessary and according to the clinic’s instructions.
Recovery Progress
Bruising, eye redness, and conjunctival swelling may persist for approximately 2–3 weeks.
Many patients feel concerned when experiencing these symptoms for the first time, but in most cases, they resolve completely. The duration may vary depending on severity.
The final surgical outcome will gradually settle and become fully apparent after 3–6 months.
Early asymmetry caused by swelling typically improves over time.
After surgery, you may experience a foreign body sensation, light sensitivity, blurred vision, or temporary difficulty focusing.
These symptoms usually improve with time. If discomfort persists, please use artificial tears as needed.
If lower eyelid fat repositioning was performed through the conjunctiva, pooled blood may drain as blood-tinged tears for up to one week after surgery.
This is not active bleeding, so there is no need to worry.
However, if symptoms continue, please visit the clinic.
For patients who underwent incisional procedures (incisional double eyelid surgery, sub-brow lift, upper blepharoplasty, or lower blepharoplasty), please avoid activities that increase blood pressure, such as straining your face or blowing your nose, for at least 1 month.
Wound Care
Please avoid rubbing your eyes or forcefully closing them.
Immediately after surgery, slight bleeding or oozing may occur around the surgical area.
If blood is flowing, gently press the area with gauze to control the bleeding.
Stitches are typically removed on the 7th day, but depending on the wound condition, removal may take place within 3–10 days after surgery.
Do not forcibly remove any scabs that have formed on the surgical site.
If it is difficult for you to visit our clinic, stitches can be removed at a nearby ophthalmology clinic for a fee of approximately KRW 10,000–20,000.
Cleansing & Showering
From 3–4 days after surgery, light contact with clean water is usually acceptable.
However, please avoid getting the surgical area wet as much as possible until the stitches are removed.
You may resume normal face washing after stitch removal, but do not rub the surgical area.
Basic skincare and light makeup (such as foundation or skin makeup) may be applied starting the day after stitch removal.
Please begin gently and avoid rubbing your eyes.
In the case of lower eyelid fat repositioning, light face washing is usually possible starting 3 days after surgery.
(However, this may vary depending on the surgical method.)
Heavy eye makeup may be applied starting 3 weeks after surgery.
When removing makeup, please use a dedicated eye cleanser and cleanse gently.
Eyelash extensions are recommended after 1 month, and semi-permanent cosmetic tattoos after 3 months.
Contact lenses should be used only after 3 weeks post-surgery.
Steam room, saunas, and swimming are prohibited for one month after surgery.
Prescribed Medications
Please take all medications prescribed by the clinic as instructed after surgery.
Skipping doses may increase the risk of inflammation.
After discharge, please take the prescribed medications regularly at the designated times. If symptoms such as diarrhea or hives occur after taking the medication, discontinue use and contact the clinic immediately.
Pain relievers are included in the prescription.
However, if you continue to experience significant pain, you may take additional Tylenol (acetaminophen).
For 1 month after surgery, please avoid multivitamins (especially Vitamin E) and nutritional supplements, as they may increase the risk of bleeding.
Unless absolutely necessary, aspirin should be avoided for at least one week after surgery.
Swelling-reduction medications are not recommended, as they may also increase the risk of bleeding.
Exercise
Light exercise may be resumed starting 1 week after surgery.
Strenuous activities (such as workouts, hiking, or swimming) should be avoided for at least 1 month.
General Post-Operative Precautions
Alcohol & Smoking
Alcohol consumption and smoking are strictly prohibited for one month after surgery.
Please also avoid excessive exercise and stress during the recovery period.
Alcohol may increase the risk of inflammation, and smoking constricts blood vessels, which can delay wound healing and slow recovery.
